Lee Trevino

(PGA Tour 29, Senior PGA Tour 29, U.S Open Champion 1968, 1971, British Open Champion 1971, 1972, PGA Champion 1974, 1984, Member, World Golf Hall of Fame, 5-Time winner of PGA Tour Vardon Trophy)

Raised by his mother and grandfather in a rundown shack without electricity or indoor plumbing, Lee Trevino rose up from poverty to become one of the greatest golfers and beloved personalities of his time.

Trevino knew hard work from the early age of five when he worked in the cotton fields on the outskirts of Dallas. Eager to earn a few extra dollars, the young Trevino would pick golf balls out of the fairway rough of the golf course that was located only 100 yards from his modest home. It was then that Trevino was introduced to the game of golf and found his calling.

At the age of eight, Trevino began caddying, choosing to spend more time on the golf course than in the classroom. He taught himself the game using old, discarded clubs, and he was soon making small wagers on golf games with his co-workers.

At the age of 17, Trevino began a four -year stint with the Marines. Following his discharge, he immediately returned to golf working at a driving range and earning his Class A card. Trevino eventually found his way to the PGA TOUR in 1967 and quickly established himself as one of the best, finishing fifth in The U.S. Open and winning “Rookie of the Year” honors.

The following year, Trevino earned the first of his two U.S. Open titles and became a dominant force on the TOUR. In just a four-week span in 1971, Trevino won The U.S. Open, The Canadian Open and The British Open in succession.

In 1975, Trevino was nearly killed when he was struck by lightning during The Western Open golf tournament and while the effects of his injuries lingered, he went on to win the Canadian Open in 1977, and his final major—The PGA Championship—in 1984.

With 29 victories to his credit on the PGA TOUR, Trevino set his sights on The Champions Tour where he has found success 29 times as well. A five-time PGA TOUR Vardon Trophy winner, Trevino was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1981.
